Covenant

Covenant Zebra :)

Okay. We’ll do some discussion words. To go with the topic for the evening, let’s continue some discussion on the idea of covenant and keep trying to think of how covenant is a part of our whole life.

I think something important we didn’t get a chance to discuss last night was the fact that when Abram set up the whole cerimonial part of the covenant, he fell into a deep sleep. Then God walked between the split animals and comepleted the ritual without him! The symbolism here is that God is going to keep his promise, even when we don’t keep ours. So I think this whole passage about covenant is just another reason to trust God with all our hearts so that the covenant can be completed, because God is already there waiting for you.

I think it’s important to realize that our covenant with God needs to be the first and most important covenant in our lives. We need to decide what falls in line with our covenant with God. I think that is something that we as our generation makes harder on ourselves. We don’t talk about our boundaries and what we do when we reach the boundary. Leviticus Chapter 10:10-11 has me really thinking about that lately.

Both responses are great so far! A second question we might be able to ask based on Grace’s post, is: what is holy?

I agree with the Leviticus passage saying that we should learn to discern the holy from the unholy – we could perhaps begin to discuss what holiness is. Holiness is, to set the connection here, correct participation in our covenant with God – maybe it is also in part the way we live in hope and expectation and faith in the promise of God and the covenant God has made with us.

what does this mean for us as people in covenant with God?

  3. Grace Williams says:

To be honest I don’t have a good definition of what is holy. But if we don’t discern what is holy or not we sin and sin would violate our covenant.

  4. Jonathan says:

Grace, “I don’t know” is an okay answer! We all reach points where we’re not sure how to answer questions or discern the truth. That is why these types of conversations are so wonderful! We get to brainstorm together.

Here is a little of how I would start the conversation on “Holiness”: http://wp.me/pzDCd-2q

But, this is a bit heavy, and not the only way to approach the topic. Anyone who is interested, maybe looking up in a few different dictionaries the definition of the word ‘holy’ and maybe the etymology (the word’s history) might be a good place to go. Let’s try it.

I don’t have time to respond to the blog at this time but I certainly will soon. I need to post a major prayer request. John Griffis the 6th math teacher at BMS (He taught Maggie, Ali Case, Brett and Kaylee Powell, and me). He fell off his roof on saturday, luckily he was rushed to the hospital and had emergency brain surgery. He needs a miracle. He is currently in a medically induced coma. Please pray for him! To find out more join the facebook group: Prayers, comments and Updates for John Griffis or at teamgriffis.blogspot Thanks!
